10 Students Receive EEPNL, NNPC International Postgraduate Scholarships

10 lucky students, who made First Class degrees in Engineering courses from different institutions across the country, have been awarded scholarships by Esso Exploration and Production Limited (EEPNL), an affiliate of ExxonMobil, in conjunction with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), to pursue post graduate studies in Geosciences and Engineering in British and American Universities.

The 10 lucky beneficiaries, who have already been admitted by their respective institutions, had emerged out of about 10,000 applicants. The scholarships cover tuition, accommodation, personal upkeep and all other fees specified by the respective institution.  The latest batch has now pushed the total number of the EEPNL’s International Postgraduate Scholarship beneficiaries to 100 since its inception.

At a special ceremony held in honour of the awardees in Lagos recently,  EEPNL’s Executive Director, Mr. Jide Ayo-Vaughan, explained that the purpose of the scholarship was to build the capacities of young and brilliant Nigerians, to boost the pool of qualified manpower for career opportunities in the country’s Oil and Gas industry.

He noted that the gesture was also in line with the company’s philosophy of Corporate Social Responsibility, under which it contributes to the development of the society.

Ayo-Vaughan implored the beneficiaries to justify the confidence the company reposes in them, through their conduct and academic success at the end of their Master’s degree programmes.

On the screening and selection process, Mobil Producing Nigeria’s (MPN) Executive Director and In-Country Human Resources Manager, Mr. Udom Inoyo, who was involved in every stage of the process, said it was transparent and rigorous.

His declared: "It was not an easy task for the 10 beneficiaries to emerge as winners, due to the fact that about 10,000 applications were received."

Representative of the NNPC, Mrs. Iyabo Ayobami-Ojo said the corporation was proud to be associated with the project.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Oluwatosin Okuwobi, who will study Thermal Power (Mechanical) at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom (UK), said the scholarship came at a time when he had thought that there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

He said: "I studied very hard and this goes on to show that God surely blessed our effort.
