Bayelsa speaker in N78m fraud investigation

The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Kombowel Benson and 18 other members are being investigated by the Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi, Lagos, for the alleged misappropriation of N78m.
In a statement signed by the SF spokesperson, Mrs. Ngozi Isintume, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, a petition against the suspects was said to have been brought by Transparency and Good Governance Coalition, an Abuja based group.
“The suspects had allegedly requested the approval of N78m from the state governor to attend the 43rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Africa Regional Conference in South Africa from June 29, 2012 to July 8, 2012.
“Police investigation so far revealed that the speaker, leading other 18 members, including his deputy, with the exception of Omonibeke and three others, allegedly departed Nigeria for South Africa for the conference on July 6 and arrived Johannesburg on July 7, 2012, the day the conference ended,” the statement said.
