PH singer claims she got paid N31m for semi-nude magazine shoot

We’re not believing a word of it but that’s what she’s claiming!
Her name is Adokiye Kyrian Yvonne and until now she was relatively a nobody.
She had however released a few singles in August 2012, one of which featured popular rapper Olamide. We listened to the song, it was horrible at best.
Rivers-born Adokiye is claiming she got paid $200,000 and was also given a Mercedes Benz G Wagon for this raunchy photo spread which has been featured in a New York magazine.
She however fails to divulge further details like the name of the magazine, where and when the photoshoot took place, only leading to the speculation that it is another desperate PR stunt.
Think of it as a brilliant idea or lame, Adokiye is getting her 60 seconds of fame right now as the photos have gone viral already.

Two survived, nine died in canoe tragedy –LASG

Oseni, The waterways and Naval officials at the scene

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it rescued two survivors in the Sunday canoe accident at Imude in Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area.
The Commissioner for Rural Development, Mr. Cornelius Ojelabi, added that nine corpses were also recovered from the water and had been buried.
He said, “There were 11 people in the canoe, which capsized on Sunday.
“Two people were rescued and are responding to treatment. The other nine persons in the canoe drowned. Their bodies had been recovered completely and were buried yesterday (Monday).”
The commissioner, however, said the drowning of the nine persons was not as a result of natural disaster.
He explained that they were victims of water pressure caused by a bigger and powerful speed boat, which caused the canoe to capsize.
“It was the pressure from speed boat that caused the canoe to capsize and not any natural disaster,” Ojelabi said.
The commissioner added that the state government would investigate the incident further to prevent a recurrence.

Thousands evacuate as Hurricane Sandy threatens US East Coast

Hurricane Sandy is closing in on highly populated areas of the US east coast, threatening storm surges and devastating flooding.
In New York City, thousands of people have been ordered to leave their homes and evacuation shelters have been set up in 76 schools.
Public transport has been halted and the New York Stock Exchange closed.
Forecasters fear Sandy will become a super-storm when it collides with cold weather fronts from the west and north.

It also coincides with a full moon, which is bringing higher tides.
Sandy has already killed 60 people after sweeping through the Caribbean in the past week.
Campaigning for the US presidential election has also been disrupted, eight days ahead of election day on 6 November.
This gives Barack Obama a chance to appear above politics and to look presidential – but any failure would be magnified, and problems tend to get blamed on the president”
At 08:00 EDT (12:00 GMT), Sandy was churning about 310 miles (505km) south-east of New York City, the National Hurricane Center said.
Forecasters said its maximum sustained winds were 85mph (140km/h) with higher gusts.
Hurricane force winds extended for 175 miles (280km) and tropical storm force winds for 485 miles (780km), the NHC added.
The vast hurricane, about 520 miles (835km) across, is moving slowly north-west and could linger over as many as 12 states for 24-36 hours, bringing up to 25cm of rain, 60cm of snow, extreme storm surges and power cuts.
At least 14 out of 17 people on board a replica of HMS Bounty – built for the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty – have been rescued, the US Coast Guard says.
They were rescued from two life rafts off the coast of North Carolina after they were forced to abandon ship. The Coast Guard is searching for the remaining crew members.
The eye of the storm is expected to move across the coast of mid-Atlantic states by Monday night, the NHC said.
As it will hit the US East Coast just before Hallowe’en, it is being dubbed a “Frankenstorm”.
With emergencies declared in several east-coast states, many workers were staying at home on Monday.
New York City’s subway, bus and train services were suspended from Sunday evening, and schools are shut.
Taxi driver Peter Franklin told the BBC that the city was “shut down”.
“I feel like I am living in a science fiction movie,” he said.
Hundreds of thousands of people from Maryland to Connecticut were ordered to leave low-lying coastal areas.

Hurricane Sandy may affect 60 million in US — CNN

Hurricane Sandy’s outer bands pummeled the East Coast on Monday with howling winds, torrential downpours and storm surges that authorities warned could bring widespread devastation.
“This is the most catastrophic event that we have faced and been able to plan for in any of our lifetimes,” Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy said.
The storm’s centre was expected to make landfall by early evening along or just south of the southern New Jersey coast.

Obama declares ‘major disaster’ as Superstorm Sandy batters U.S, Canada

Obama

United States President Barack Obama on Tuesday declared a ‘major disaster’ in New York and Long Island as Superstorm Sandy battered homes, offices and other structures on the nation’s East Coast, killing no fewer than 17 persons, skynews reports.
At least 84 flights between the U.S east coast and London Heathrow have been cancelled while fire fighters are having a tough time battling blazes at various places hit by the superstorm.
A number of towns in New York were flooded after a levee broke while many people have fled their homes.
It was raining heavily in Manhattan, New York all Tuesday morning while the streets were free of traffic.
Tree branches also littered the streets while many have been left without power.

Ajimobi’s wife denies money laundering arrest in London

Wife of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Florence

Wife of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Florence, has denied reports of her arrest by the Metropolitan Police in London.
Speaking with journalists in a telephone interview on Tuesday, the governor’s wife described the news of her arrest as the handiwork of the opposition trying to discredit the Ajimobi-led administration in the state.

An evening newspaper had, on Tuesday in its online version, published a report entitled ‘Anxiety over Florence Ajimobi’s alleged arrest in UK.’ An online agency, Newsleak, also claimed that the wife of the governor had been arrested in London for money laundering.
Asked if she was invited by the police since her arrival in London, she said, “No, not at all. I came back with my daughter on Sunday. Now, I am getting ready to come back home. I have not been invited by the police and I don’t know what all this is about.”
On the reason for her latest trip abroad, she said she took her 14-year-old daughter back to school after her holiday.
She said, “I have a 14-year-old daughter who has been here since 2007. She came to Nigeria for two weeks; we left Nigeria on Sunday morning. That is my mission here.
“I read the report here in England. I was shocked. I read it but there is no iota of truth in everything they wrote. I’m sure it is the work of the  opposition and I am surprised that some people can descend so low to write falsehood.
“I am expected back in the country tomorrow (today) morning.”
Asked to confirm the allegation that she had since the inception of the administration travelled for 52 times, she simply said, “It then means I am not living in Nigeria. Maybe, when I travel back, I will show you my passport to count how many times I have travelled.
“I want you to deal with facts. If you look at my passport since 2007 and compare the way I travelled then with the way I travel now, you will discover that I travel less now.
“My daughter is complaining that I am not regular here. I make her come to Nigeria more because I can’t afford to spend 10 days or more over here.”

Meanwhile, the governor has instituted a N1bn suit against the Independent Communications Network Limited, publishers of PM News for the report.

One of the governor’s aide, who preferred anonymity, said, “So far the governor has spent 68 weeks. How do you reconcile the claim that the First Lady has travelled 52 times since the inception of this administration? Does it mean that she travels every week?”

Hurricane Sandy fallout may affect Lagos –Govt

Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Development and Infrastructure, Mr. Adesegun Oniru

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday warned residents of the state to prepare for the ripple effect of Hurricane Sandy in the state.
Hurricane Sandy is a 2012 late-season violent tropical storm that has affected Jamaica, Cuba, the Bahamas, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the eastern seaboard of the United States of America.
The Commissioner for Waterfront Development and Infrastructure, Mr. Adesegun Oniru, said the government was projecting that within seven to 14 days, the state would experience the ripple effect of the hurricane in its coast lines.
He explained that the government based its projection on, “experience, records and study of past happenings” and had started taking precautionary measures.
Oniru said, “This warning is not to cause panic in Lagos, but to place us all on alert that if we notice anything unusual in our coast lines, we should not go near the waters but rather call government attention.
“This storm has hit the Caribbean and is now in USA. We always get a ripple effect of such happening in Lagos.
“This wind started in Africa, went west gathering more wind and later turning to hurricane. We expect a splash back effect. It could be on our coast lines and shore lines, it could be more than that. And it may not happen at all. Everybody must be vigilant. Let us be careful around our oceans and lagoons.”
The commissioner said the government was planning to protect Kuramo, Oniru, Majidun, Alpha beach and other areas affected by the last ocean surge in the state.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on the Environment, Dr. Taofeek Folami, urged the residents of the state to avoid flooding effect of the storm by refraining from dumping their refuse into drainage channels.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, urged the  state residents not to  panic, saying the alert was for them to know what to do to prepare for such occurence.

Suicide bomber kills eight, injures 100 in Nigerian church

A view shows St. Rita's Catholic church in the Malali village, after a bomb attack, in Nigeria's northern city of Kaduna October 28, 2012. A suicide bomber drove a vehicle packed with explosives

A suicide bomber drove a jeep packed with explosives into a Catholic church in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least eight people, injuring more than 100 and triggering reprisal attacks that killed at least two more, officials said.
The bomber drove right into the packed St Rita's church in the Malali area of Kaduna, a volatile ethnically and religiously mixed city, in the morning, witnesses said.
A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Yushua Shuaib said eight people had been confirmed killed and more than 100 injured.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Islamist sect Boko Haram has claimed similar attacks in the past and has attacked several churches with bombs and guns as it intensified its campaign against Christians in the past year.
"The heavy explosion also damaged so many buildings around the area," said survivor Linus Lighthouse.
A wall of the church was blasted open and scorched black, with debris lying around. Police cordoned the area off.
Church attacks often target Nigeria's middle belt, where its largely Christian south and mostly Muslim north meet and where sectarian tensions run high. Kaduna's mixed population lies along that faultline.
BODIES
Shortly after the blast, angry Christian youths took to the streets armed with sticks and knives. A Reuters reporter saw two bodies at the roadside lying in pools of blood.
"We killed them and we'll do more," shouted a youth, with blood on his shirt, before police chased him and others away. Police set up roadblocks and patrols across the town in an effort to prevent the violence spreading.
At least 2,800 people have died in fighting since Boko Haram's insurrection began in 2009, according to Human Rights Watch. Most were Muslims in the northeast of the country, where the sect usually attacks politicians and security forces.
The sect says it is fighting to create an Islamic state in Nigeria, whose 160 million people are split roughly evenly between Christians and Muslims.
Another witness to the bombing, Daniel Kazah, a member of the Catholic cadets at the church, said he had seen three bodies on the bloodied church floor in the aftermath.
In previous such attacks, bombers have usually failed to enter church buildings and detonated their explosives at entrances or in car parks.
A spokesman for St Gerard's Catholic hospital, Sunday John, said the hospital was treating 14 injured. Another hospital, Garkura, had at least 84 victims, a NEMA official said.
Many residents of Kaduna rushed indoors, fearing an upsurge in the sectarian killing that has periodically blighted the city. A bomb attack in a church in Kaduna state in June triggered a week of tit-for-tat violence that killed at least 90 people.

Pope Names Nigerian Onaiyekan Cardinal

Pope Benedict XVI has promoted Nigerian Bishop John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan along with five others six as cardinals.
Onaiyekan becomes the third Nigerian cardinal after Francis Arinze  and Olubumi Okogie.  Before his promotion Onaiyekan was the Archbishop of Abuja.
Others named along with Onaiyekan are: Archbishop of Bogota, Colombia, Ruben Salazar Gomez; Archbishop of Manila, Philippines, Luis Antonio Tagle; Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites in Lebanon, Bechara Boutros Rai; and the major Archbishop of the Trivandrum of the Siro-Malankaresi in India, Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal.
Onaiyekan was born in the town of Kabba, in what is now Kogi State, to Bartholomew and Joann Onaiyekan. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Kabba from 1949 until 1956, Mount St. Michael's Secondary School in Aliade, Benue State from 1957 until 1962, and Ss. Peter & Paul Major Seminary in Bodija, Ibadan from 1963 until 1965. He completed his religious studies in Rome in 1969, and was ordained as a priest on August 3 of that year Ahmadu Bello, Premier of Nigeria's Northern Region, had offered him a scholarship to study abroad.
Onaiyekan taught at St. Kizito's College, Isanlu in 1969. He became rector of St. Clement Junior Seminary in Lokoja in 1971. He finished his Licentiate of Sacred Scripture in 1973 and earned his doctorate in 1976. He became Vice Rector of Ss. Peter & Paul in 1977.

In October 1980, Pope John Paul II gave Onaiyekan a five-year appointment to the Pontifical International Theological Commission. In November, he joined the International Catholic/ Methodist Dialogue Commission.
Onaiyekan was ordained as bishop on January 6, 1983, and became the Bishop of Ilorin, Kwara State. In 1990 he became Co-Adjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Abuja, and when the diocese became a Metropolitan See in 1994, John Onaiyekan became the Metropolitan of Abuja.
Onaiyekan was elected to the position of Vice President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in 1994, and President of that organization in 2000.
Archbishop Onaiyekan was named Pax Christi International's 2012 Peace Laureate.
On Tuesday, September 18, 2012, Archbishop Onaiyekan was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to serve as one of the papally-appointed Synod Fathers for the upcoming October 2012 Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelization.

Clean your home (and your hair) with vodka, olive oil and raw egg yolk: Our guide to housekeeping without unhealthy chemicals

Recent research shows that household products contain a shocking cocktail of damaging chemicals, many of them linked to fertility problems in women, including contributing to an early menopause.

Mandy Francis using natural products such as lemon, salt and bicarbonate of soda to clean her house
Mandy Francis using natural products such as lemon, salt and bicarbonate of soda to clean her house

So what are the alternatives? Health-conscious mother-of-two Mandy Francis enrolled the help of housekeeping expert Janey Lee Grace, who promotes the natural alternatives to almost everything, and made her own products - with very surprising results...

Olive oil and white wine vinegar

CLEANING SPRAY

Most of these contain chlorine or bleach to cut through grease, but a study has revealed that exposure to these sprays could account for as many as 15 per cent of adult asthma cases.
Average cost: £2.

MAKE YOUR OWN: White vinegar dissolves dirt and stains and is gentle enough to use on anything from kitchen countertops to wooden flooring. It should absorb bad smells, and the vinegar aroma should disappear when it dries. Mix equal parts white vinegar and lukewarm water in a spray bottle, then add a few drops of your favourite essential oil. Cost: 50p.

DID IT WORK? Easy to make up and use, this removed sticky patches and dried-on food well. Despite the lavender oil, however, there was still a definite chip shop aroma in the kitchen an hour later.

7/10

Baking soda

OVEN CLEANER

Usually needs to be sprayed on and left to work, making it more likely you’ll inhale fumes. Ingredients can include butane, used to soften hardened grease and grime but which can cause headaches and  dizziness. Also contains monoethanolamine, which can irritate the lungs.
Average cost: £4.

MAKE YOUR OWN: To tackle burnt-on food, sprinkle baking soda over the bottom of the oven, then spritz it with water from a spray bottle, and leave overnight, before removing the paste with a sponge. If baked-on food remains, sprinkle more baking soda on to it, then add a little white vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then scrub. Cost: 50p.

DID IT WORK? Whether chemical or natural, oven cleaning is always a messy business. Leaving it on overnight was a pain — no one wants a filthy cleaning job first thing in the morning. The bicarbonate cleaned the oven, but failed to remove the burnt-on deposits.

3/10

Lemon juice

FURNITURE POLISH

I love the smell of furniture polish, but apparently it lingers because of the high level of chemical solvents in it, which can irritate the throat and eyes.
Cost: £1.50.

MAKE YOUR OWN: For finished wood, add two-parts cheap olive oil to one-part lemon juice and apply with a cloth. Leave for 30 minutes, then buff off with an old towel. For unfinished wood, add a teaspoon of lemon juice to 300ml of mineral oil (the food-safe type available from kitchen and hardware shops) and repeat as above. Cost: 70p.

DID IT WORK? To a degree, though it was messy and inconvenient. It cleaned well and smelled fresh, but didn’t provide the high shine you get with regular polish.

4/10

Vinegar

DISHWASHER TABLETS

Most of these are packed with strong petroleum-based  detergents and caustic alkalis to  emulsify grease, which can burn the skin. Some detergents also contain dry chlorine, which is  activated when mixed with water, and can cause breathing  problems for some people when they open the washer.
Average cost: 25p a wash.

MAKE YOUR OWN: Mix a quarter of a cup of citric acid (a weak organic acid used as a food preservative) with a quarter of a cup of household salt, one cup of bicarbonate of soda and one cup of borax (a naturally occurring mineral, popular as a ‘green’ cleansing product).
Add a little water so it’s sticky but not runny, and five to ten drops of eucalyptus or lemon oil. Store in a sealed container. Use two tablespoons when required, and use white distilled vinegar as a rinse aid. Cost: 30p a wash.

DID IT WORK? I struggled to find citric acid and borax in the shops and ended up buying it online. The mixture was messy, but cleaned well. Sadly, once again, the vinegar made my kitchen smell like a chip shop.

3/10

Pot pourri

AIR FRESHENERS

These are full of synthetic fragrances that can trigger asthma — but that’s not all. A study of 14 air fresheners revealed many contained chemicals that have been linked to terrifying things from reproductive problems to birth disorders.
Average cost: £1.

MAKE YOUR OWN: Use pot-pourri to fragrance your home. If you prefer a spray freshener, half-fill a plant spritzer with filtered water, add two drops of essential oil (lemon or eucalyptus work well) and a drop of white vinegar or vodka to preserve it, then spray around your home.
Cost: from a few pence for drops of essential oil to several pounds for pot-pourri.

DID IT WORK? Pot-pourri keeps a room fragrant for weeks, though can be costly and gathers dust.  The natural spray worked well: I preferred it to the synthetic ones.

9/10

Soap

WASHING  POWDER/ LIQUID

Most common laundry detergents contain chemicals, traces of which are left on clothes after washing. This can cause rashes and sinus problems.
The manufacture and use of chemical detergents have been shown to have a long-term toxic effect on the environment.
Average cost: 18p a wash.

MAKE YOUR OWN: Natural housekeeping expert Janey Lee Grace recommends laundry balls like the Ecoegg (available online at Lakeland) which contain ionised pellets to remove dirt from clothes without using harsh detergents (14p a wash). Alternatively, Janey suggests mixing a cup of finely-grated soap with just less than a cup of washing soda, which is much more environmentally friendly. Cost: 15p a wash.

DID IT WORK? Both the Ecoegg and washing soda options worked well, but I missed the fresh  fragrance of conventional washing powder. No major difference in price between the chemical and natural products.

7/10

Surface wipes

SURFACE WIPES

I love the convenience of  disposable surface wipes. Made from plastic, cellulose and  polyester fibres pressed together and soaked in cleaning fluid, they’re packed with chemicals, however, and damaging to the environment because they’re so slow to biodegrade, and are said  to fester in our sewers. Time for a rethink.
Average cost: £2.80 for 90 wipes.

MAKE YOUR OWN: A general  purpose e-cloth (a microfibre cleaning cloth available from supermarkets for £4.99) and a spritz of water is all you need, according to Janey Lee Grace. Cost: £4.99 for a cloth that can be washed more than 300 times.

DID IT WORK? Yes. Far better than surface wipes and even left a smear-free shine on difficult  surfaces, such as steel and glass.

10/10

Eggs

SHAMPOO

Most shampoos contain the same mixture of detergents to remove grease and grime from hair. But some of the ingredients can break down into formaldehyde during storage, and formaldehyde vapours can cause breathing problems in asthma sufferers.
According to Pat Thomas, author of What’s In This Stuff?, formaldehyde-forming agents mixed with some of the emulsifying ingredients in shampoos can form a carcinogen.
Average cost: 5p a wash.

MAKE YOUR OWN: A natural shampoo can be made by whisking one egg yolk into half a cup of cold chamomile tea. Massage through your hair and rinse with cold water, then lukewarm water. If your hair’s oily, use egg white instead of yolk. Cost: 30p a wash.

DID IT WORK? No. Messy and rather disgusting — it left my hair feeling soft but dirty. And be warned, if you rinse with hot water you could end up with scrambled egg in your hair. Better to use a chemical-free shampoo from a health food shop.

0/10

Natural housekeeping could save you money

OVERALL VERDICT

The head-spinning mix of powerful chemicals in our homes should be a concern for all of us, but are DIY alternatives a viable option?
They're definitely cheaper. Some of the mixtures performed really well and ideas such as using an  e-cloth and water instead of surface wipes worked brilliantly.

But some of the other concoctions gave nothing like the results of their chemical equivalents, and were messy and time-consuming.

One thing's certain - I'm going to start buying more natural, eco-friendly ranges, and I've cut out unnecessary products, such as an air freshener in the car.
If a chemical product's the only option, I'll be using less of it.

Wizkid to work with M.I’s former manager Godwin Tom

Wizkid will soon be working with Godwin Tom

We’ve got news for you – the pop star may have hired popular manager Godwin Tom.
Wiz and Osarenkhoe, who runs her own outfit M.e.tal Management, ended their business relationship in June 2012, and we’re told Wizzy has been without a manager since then.
Meanwhile, Wizzy’s label EME also recently announced that they are ‘currently seeking for a General Manager to manage its growing business and build up the EME label.’
Godwin seems like the likely replacement, having handled M.I, in whose career he played a vital role, and rapper duo Show Dem Camp. He also had a stint with singer Airis and is currently part of singer Waje‘s management team.
Inside sources tell us that Godwin hasn’t signed any contracts, as he will be on probation for now.
Meanwhile, Mr Tom said ’I’ve seen the news and there’s a lot of speculation. There has been no announcement of such so let’s just leave it at that for now‘. But going by his words on social network Twitter, Godwin seems to be excited about the new role.
‘Things are coming together… I am doing what I love… What Im good at. I dont regret being who I am! I am the best me! I dont regret one bit of my last 5+ years. They were the best. And best is relative… Things are about to get better!‘ he tweeted.

Drop your case and team up with Ibinabo’ Kate Henshaw tells Emeka Ike

Kate Henshaw

Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw has expressed displeasure at the many controversies surrounding the victory of Ibinabo Fiberisima in the just concluded elections of the Actors Guild of Nigeria.
She mentioned this in a recent interview with NET, where she advised that Emeka Ike bury his sentiments and accept the result as valid. According to her, this is important for the growth of the association, ‘Emeka should join forces with I.B and stop all this rancour because it doesn’t make us serious at all, which is unnecessary. He should drop whatever suit or case he has, marry his plans and support IB. Enough is enough’
Speaking further on the victory, Henshaw expressed high hopes in the newly elected excos, adding that AGN as the biggest body in movie industry, deserves a focused leader, a position she hopes Fiberisima will live up to, ‘Hopefully, I.B (Ibinabo Fiberisima) will turn things around for AGN. We are like the biggest body ever, so I am praying she can turn things around and make us more unified, because the division is what has caused us to not to be where we ought to be’
Henshaw, 41, made her movie debut in 1993 in the movie When the Sun Sets and has since featured in various movies including Stronger Than Pain which got her AMAA  award as best actress in 2008.

Who’s better at the kissing game? President Obama or GEJ?

Which couple kissed better?

US Presidential couple Barack and Michelle Obama have always shown public affection and we adore them for it.

But what can we say about our very own Goodluck Jonathan and First Lady Dame Patience?
The couple rarely get intimate in public. But they were happy to show us some PDA when Patience recently returned from Germany.
Will Nigeria’s first couple show us more of their soft sides? Which couple looked cuter, by the way?!

M.I records tribute song ‘Ashes’ for ALUU 4

Rapper Jude ‘M.I‘ Abaga has released a tribute song titled ‘Ashes‘ to ALUU4, the four University of Port Harcourt students who lost their lives in Aluu community, Port Harcourt.
After publishing an article berating the act, M.I goes on to deliver some of the most touching lyrics he’s ever written on the four minute song.
The J Town rapper has in the past always condemned violence.
’4 young men died at the hands of a lynch mob on the 5th of October 2012. Whether or not their deaths will mean anything, or fade out of our minds as just another meaningless tragedy, is up to us and what we do from here on.
I hope this song captures that message. Nothing would be worse than for a death to mean nothing.
Nothing‘.

Revealed: Why Femi Kuti shunned The Headies

Those who attended The Headies 2012 awards show on Saturday October 20, were surprised when the show ended without musician Femi Kuti gracing the stage.
It had been highly publicized that the respected Afrobeat singer-saxophonist was to perform at the prestigious awards show -his first ever. He was also to be inducted into the well respected ‘Hall of Fame‘.
But Femi never showed up, rather he stayed behind at the New Afrika Shrine where the recently concluded Felabration 2012 was going onNET placed a call to Yeni Kuti, Femi’s elder sister who didn’t divulge much information other than there was a ‘slight misunderstanding’.
But an inside source close to the Kuti family tells us it was more than a misunderstanding, allegedly having to do with the failure of the awards organizers and Kuti’s managers to reconcile last minute differences.
They were meant to pay Shoki shoki (Femi) some balance for logistics but as at Saturday evening we hadn’t received the money, so he stayed back at the Shrine for Felabration‘, a reliable source told us in anonymity. We could not immediately confirm this.
The Headies does not pay musicians for performances, and this is the first time a Hall of Fame inductee will stay away from the glamorous event.
No word yet from the organizers about why Femi was absent.

The Kate Henshaw interview: ‘I want to love again’

Face of Onga, ex-Glo ambassador and now, a judge for Nigeria’s Got Talent reality show, actress Kate Henshaw can be rightly referred to as multi-faceted and successful.
In this exclusive chat with NET, Henshaw talks about her passion for acting and the many challenges she has dealt with, including her broken marriage.

It’s been a while, where have you been?
I’ve been around in Nigeria. You don’t have to come out all the time. I can’t do that because it will water down my brand and I want people to have an expectation when they see my face on posters. That ‘Oh I have not see Kate in a while, for her to be in the movie, I must see it’ feeling and that alone is enough for me.

You are an actress with an appeal that cuts across different generations. What do you think is responsible for your relevance after almost 20 years in the business?
I just try to be myself and I do a few other things; I don’t only act, I MC and I have business that I do on the side, because acting alone cannot sustain you. Again, I think my ability to smile and laugh at every situation. People tell me when I smile, it’s as though I don’t have any problems, some even ask if I ever get angry but I tell them I choose to be happy, and that is the most positive attitude to grow through life. Life is hard, especially in Nigeria, things are hard, [but there's] no need carrying it on our faces as though the world is on your shoulders. A lot is happening and I ought to be grateful.

Now that you are over 40 and have spent over 19 years in the industry, how many more years do you plan to continue acting?
If I can reach 100, it won’t be bad. Besides, 40 is a number and people say life begins at 40, which means I am only a baby, and life has just begun for me.

Still on your acting career, as someone who has been in several movies and played diverse roles, are there roles you still wish to play?
A mad woman. Someone who is impaired physically or mentally. I want a case where people will see the movie and ask themselves if I really am the one in the movie.

What’s the most memorable movie you’ve done?
My very first movie, When the Sunset. I also loved the role I played in Stronger Than Pain, with Nkem Owoh. That role was different for me. In the beginning, I was really doubtful if I could play it well, but I did it and it worked out.

As someone who had a medical background, how easy was it for you to blend into the movie industry at first?
It was hard. I was scared. The script was as thick as a bible. I was with Franca Brown, Bob Manuel, the late Funmi Martins, and Sandra Achums. I didn’t think I could do it, but they were all so nice. That was when we really treasured doing movies properly, we paid attention to detail, countless rehearsals. I remember spending a lot of time with Bob Manuel, people thought we were going out.

Having spent considerable time as an actor, what’s next? Are you considering going into music?
You people should leave me. I don’t want to disgrace myself. Acting is my stronghold, I will stay there. I don’t want to veer into something and get stuck in it. I might do a collaboration soon, you never can tell.

A lot of your colleagues are beginning to go into roles behind the scenes. Will you be doing the same anytime soon?
Everyone doesn’t have to produce or direct movies, some people just want to remain in front of the camera. I have tried my hands in production. I produced a documentary for the Lagos State tax advert, I shot that one as my own contribution for them to help conscientious Lagosians on the need to pay their taxes. I also did one for the Akwa Ibom State government. I am more of someone who can plan and all that, but movie is plenty money.

Was acting something you always wanted to do?
Funny enough, I have always wanted to be a musician. I wanted to sing but my father objected strongly.

So when did acting set in?
It just happened. It’s just few years ago that I started doing it professionally; when I started it was just a case of trying to see what it will bring out for me. The late JT Tom West, I will always be grateful to him for taking me to my first audition. After my first movie, different people started coming with different jobs and I was like ‘Yeah, money is coming.’

Nollywood producers have a knack for stereotyping actors. How did you manage to avoid this?
You have to be picky. If the script comes and it’s the same thing, you ask if they can change it, because nobody will do it for you. However, if it is a case where the director has foresight and wants to see how the actor can manage the role, only then will they call you back, otherwise, the typical Nollywood producer will give you what they think people like you for.

What challenges did you face as a young actor in a budding industry?
For me, my first audition got me so many roles, so I won’t say I had lots of challenges. Once I surmounted working with the various stars on set, I started learning and heeded to advice I got from some people. I also made a promise to myself to be professional about everything and always be on time. I don’t do lateness at all. This is because Uche Obi Osotule and I were up for the same role from Opa Williams in the movie Onome. He said he was going to give it to the first person that arrived. I got there ten minutes past eight and lost the role because Uche got there before me.

Having spent almost two decades in the industry, what would you say are the challenges faced by players in the industry?
Money. Lack of cohesion between guilds and associations. Inability to use certain structures to be able to shoot our films; for instance, getting the airport is not easy, and other places, they charge. We pay taxes as citizens of this country, and as film makers, we should have a deduction or access to places. While Dora was the Information minister, she complained we were portraying the police in the bad light, wearing slippers and all, but when they did not give us the needed thing, what were we to do? They need to give us the right support to achieve this.

The trend in the industry is cinematic movies and home videos. This has negatively affected soap  operas, for which you are popular. What is your take on this?
There will always be a place for the different aspects of the entertainment industry. Whether you go to the cinemas or you buy a DVD. I have not done soaps in a while, it remains something I love doing, but because of the frequency, you have to be available to do a lot of recording. There is always room for soaps, but it has to be something that will attract people like Check Mate, or Candle Light. I can’t pick just one. I have done TV, soap, and stage, and I love all of it. I wanna do everything.

You strike people as a happy-go-lucky individual. Share with us some low moments in your life.
Generally, when life gets you down. The issue of the break-up of my marriage will get any one down, having being through 12 years and you had plans for the marriage and all of a sudden, everything stops, but then, that’s life. It hits you with a lot of things but you shouldn’t let it get you down.

Tell us more about your former marriage. How were you able to deal with it?
It’s God.  He makes things beautiful in His own time. The slightest bit of strength is all is needed to rise up. People have died in marriages, some have lost body parts while in it, and others have spent years in it. It all depends on individual, it’s just to make the most of every situation and move on. I have so much that I want to do. I have no time to be wallowing in self pity. Marriage does not define who I am, neither does it define anybody. I came into this world as an individual, two people meet and decide to make it work but if it doesn’t, let it go. I wish you well, you do same, especially when there are children involved, because they are the worst hit. My plan now is to ensure that my daughter has the best in life, no matter what.

Why did you break up?
It wasn’t working anymore. It’s good to leave, rather than continue to manage it and live in strife and rancour.

A lot of Nigerian women have recently shared their stories of physical violence in the hands of their husbands. Did you experience this?
No, not at all.

What then was the cause of the break up?
Personal.

Any regrets?
No regrets at all. My daughter came out of it and she is the most beautiful thing ever.

Any possibility of reconciliation?
No. My daughter is the most important person and she has to be taken care of. As far as she is concerned, we are for better, for worse.

Are you making plans to give love a chance again?
I don’t have anything against love. I want to love again, after all, God gave us his son to love us.

Away from your marriage, let’s talk about the new leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria. What is your take on this?
Hopefully, Ibinabo Fiberisima will turn things around for AGN. Basically, without the actors, there will be no films. We are like the biggest body ever, so I am praying she can turn things around and make us more unified, because the division is what has caused us to not to be where we ought to be. We have a lot more to do to better ourselves as a body. We need to get our acts together and pull this through together.

What’s your opinion on Emeka Ike, who seems displeased about the election?
Emeka should join forces with I.B and stop all this rancour because it doesn’t make us serious at all, which is unnecessary. He should drop whatever suit or case he has, marry his plans and support IB. Enough is enough!

What is your beauty regimen?
I work out regularly, everyday. I have my facials, massages. I love to rest, travel and I eat right. I do exercises too. I do aerobics, weight lifting, dancing; everything that will make me look good, I do it, and am very diligent with my exercises.

How do you unwind?
I relax, I go out with friends, I travel on holidays and take a rest.

Where was your last vacation spot?
Miami, and it was great, because the weather was just like what it is in Nigeria..
Let’s end this conversation with this. Tell us what you think of Aluu 4 murder…
It should be condemned. It’s like every day, we sink lower into the ground as human beings as Nigerians. Our humanity is totally lost. There are no longer the days when we see someone in trouble and we play the good Samaritan and try to help. These days, everybody will just stand and look, nobody wants to help. The security level is so low and a lot of similar killings have happened in Mubi, Boko Haram attacks and all. It is terrible
